Congress Subject

The analysis of power should not be undertaken on the basis of the primitive relationship between the individuals who lost and gain something with it but on the very relationship which constitutes them as subjects. This is a theoretical framework shared today by philosophers and social scientists of various fields which was put forward and formalized by the French philosopher Michel Foucault in two major works, Surveiller et Punir (1975) and La Volonté de Savoir (1976).

Thirty years after the publication of Surveiller et Punir and the recent edition of the courses given at the Collège de France by Foucault in which he deepens the themes of those two works, fully justify the organization of this International Congress.

The Congress general subject is the effect exercised by the two referred works, as well as by the courses at the Collège de France, over the way by which Philosophy and Social Sciences think out the power relations at occidental societies. Whatever should be the place where power is exerted, where knowledge is grounded and where a subjectivity is constituted – family, prison or world circulation of goods and people, among others – the concepts used by philosophers, historians and social scientists in theirs researches on these domains show the presence of the philosophy of Foucault, either by deepening it, or by discussing it.
